About the Search
The search for a new Music Director of the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra will take place during two seasons - 2009/10 and 2010/11. 4 finalists have recently been named and will be with us in Green Bay during the 10/11 season for approximately a week for rehearsals, community engagements, interviews, and performance.
The appointment of our next Music Director is expected to be announced in the Spring of 2011.
Frequently Asked Questions
In response to numerous questions that you’ve asked throughout our search this season, the Search Committee thought it would benefit the entire GBSO family to publish these questions and answers.
Who is on the Search Committee?
The search committee is comprised of 9 individuals: 4 GBSO musicians, 3 board members, and 2 community leaders. The Executive Director is involved as an ex-officio, non-voting member. Each musician member represents a certain section of the orchestra: strings, woodwinds, and brass.
Do the GBSO musicians have input into the selection process?
Absolutely. In addition to the 4 musicians on the Search Committee, each member player has the opportunity to fill out a detailed survey and provide personal feedback on each candidate. The feedback is consolidated and shared with the Search Committee. The committee puts a significant weight on musician input.
How is the programming determined for the Music Director candidates’ concerts?
The Search Committee asked each candidate to outline and discuss with us programs that they would envision presenting here in Green Bay. From there, each candidate has had the opportunity to suggest works for each of their programs in our 10/11 season with the final decision lying with the Search Committee.
Will the selected Music Director move to Green Bay?
Not necessarily. The GBSO board has adopted a flexible policy with regard to residency. Indeed, this is standard practice nowadays with orchestras large, small, and in-between. The overriding requirement for our new Music Director is to spend time in this community getting to know it well and becoming a primary public face of the Orchestra.
How and when will the new Music Director be chosen?
Our final candidate will be conducting the April 2011 Classics concert. The Search Committee will then make its recommendation on who should be the new Music Director to the GBSO’s board and this recommendation will be voted on by the board. After that decision, the GBSO will announce our new Music Director Designate. We anticipate making that announcement shortly after our final concert of the 10/11 season.
Will there be an opportunity for me to be involved in the search?
Yes! At each of our concerts next season you'll have the opportunity to cast your votes and comment on each of our finalists. Our ushers will provide you with comment sheets the moment you walk into the hall and collect them from you after each concert. You'll also have the chance to mix and mingle with each candidate in a variety of relaxed, intimate settings around Green Bay. More information on these events will be coming soon.
